INCOME INEQUALITY

When the term income inequality is thrown out there by liberals and the current President of the United States, I’m still not sure what they’re talking about. At first the left seemed to be pontificating about men making more money than women and indicating that it was a huge problem and had to be stopped. Of course, when the Republicans questioned this, they were waging another war on women, similar to the one republicans were falsely accused of waging prior to the 2012 presidential election.

Now I’m not saying that things are perfect out there in corporate America or even in the public sector, but laws have been passed to prevent such as this, and they were passed several decades ago. Discrimination, no matter what the context, is very hard to prove because so much is subjective. If you feel that you’re not being paid what you’re worth and sitting in a cube; while Johnny over there makes six figures, has some sort if title and an office; and you’re doing pretty much the same work; maybe it’s time for you to look for another job. The best revenge is to go somewhere else and “just show em.”

Sure, you could raise a ruckus, threaten to sue, etc. But what’s that going to get you? Probably a bad reputation, so no one will hire you. This is true especially if you’re young and have your whole life and career ahead of you. One of these days, the word’s going to get out about your old company and they may start having a hard time getting anyone to work for them. Johnny and his six figure salary, title, and office might be laid off and have to come to your company begging for a job, any job, even one where he sits in a cube and has no title.

Now, liberals seem to be talking about a different type of income inequality and for the first time in the history of this nation, a political party is not advocating the value of hard work. It started with Nancy Pelosi encouraging folks to quit their jobs and do something they’ve always wanted to do such as write a book or start that small business. Because the ACA is now the law of the land, you won’t have work at that horrible job that you hate just to have health insurance. It seems they are saying to their liberal constituents, you can quit that job you hate, the government will take care of you. I imagine we conservatives, who might have jobs that we hate that pay well, should stick with them so we can pay for all the liberals to be lazy, healthy, and happy.

Yes, I did quit a job that I was “fed up with,” to start a business and write what I hope is the first of many books. However, I only quit the job after I had enough money in the bank to last a while. Since I quit the job, I’ve taken a couple of consulting jobs to slow the depletion of my savings, but continued to work on the book and the business. Also, I’m paying for health insurance under COBRA and it’s not cheap.

As this country drifts further and further left, and appears to be embracing the theory that Karl Marx made popular, “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need,” I’m wondering if the left thinks that it’s wrong for someone like me, a software engineer by trade, to make more than someone who works at a cash register at Wal-Mart. Do they think I’m the result of some sort of privilege and somehow became a software engineer, while the Wal-Mart cashier didn’t have the benefit of privilege and is stuck being a Wal-Mart cashier? Should I cry myself to sleep at night because I can afford a nice house, a nice car, and nice clothes while the Wal-Mart cashier drives a beat-up car that she’s not sure is going to get her from point A to point B. The liberals think so.

I used to know a girl who was as dumb as a post, but because her Dad had good connections, she was able to get into the college of her choice even though she made Cs and Ds and had low scores on her college entrance exams. We’ve all known people like that and maybe you are one of them. Did this girl cry herself to sleep at night because she had privilege? I doubt it. Would the liberals want her to? Probably not, because I think her family might have been democrats. What happened to this girl? I don’t know and frankly I don’t care. I accepted my middle class/working class background, studied hard and made the grades to get in and out of the University of Alabama, aided by the above average intelligence that God gave me.

When I was in my late twenties and early thirties, I worked in an office with a girl who was a file clerk and would never be anything more than a file clerk. She wasn’t all that bright, in other words, not college material, and she came from a very poor family. I did feel sorry for her and a few times I gave her some money when she needed it, along with everyone else in the office. I guess liberals think I should have given her half my salary so we could be equal, even though my job was much harder than hers and I had worked very hard to qualify for that kind of job.

Liberals are always talking about a level playing field and that their job is not done until we have one. There is never going to be a level playing field. Look at yourself, take inventory of who you are, what you are, where you came from, and where you are going. There are always going to be people smarter than you, better looking than you, have better jobs than you. You might have to work a little harder to make those grades than the person sitting next to you. Your hair might be more difficult to deal with than hers. She may be able to eat all the cheeseburgers and pizza that she wants and not gain a pound. Her parents may have a second home on the lake and a boat, spending their weekends there, while your parents make you get up, get dressed, and go to church. Her boyfriend is the captain of the football team and you’re going to the dance with an underclassman. Decades later you may find out that her Dad had affairs and treated her and her Mom like dirt. That lake house and boat? Well, the bank had to foreclose. Stuff like this does happen.

Before she died, Mama told me on numerous occasions that everyone has their problems and while it may look like their lives were idyllic, they may not be any better than ours. Is there anyone out there that I would like to change places with? Frankly no! I have a friend whose husband makes good money and is a good man. She doesn’t work and spends most of her time traveling. Do I want to be her? No. Even though she has a great life, I don’t want to trade places with her for a number of reasons. There’s a guy that I would like to go out with, but he has a girlfriend. Do I want to trade places with that girlfriend? No. I don’t know anything about her other than she’s going out with someone I like.

The playing field is never going to be level even though the liberals are doing their dead-level best to create one, thinking they can create Heaven here on earth. And that’s going to happen. In creating it, most of us will be brought down and very few will be brought up. Take what you have and what God has given you; follow him and let everything else go. It is only then that we’ll have true fulfillment.
