Chilling things are taking place in the United States of America. As most of us go about our daily lives, most of us are oblivious to the sinister things that have been foisted upon us by the Obama administration and the administration’s band of liberal/progressive henchmen.
We’re losing our freedoms little by little. The factors that separate our great nation from the rest of the countries on the planet including our economy based on the principles of capitalism and the free market plus our legal system based on the Ten Commandments and Judeo-Christian principles, are gradually being eroded. This erosion has been taking place for decades and you could probably say that it dates back to former president Woodrow Wilson. Furthermore, the erosion has led to the America voters electing a president twice who is diametrically opposite to the principles of a free market and Judeo-Christian values.
This article is part one of a series in which I intend to outline areas where we’ve lost our freedoms and have become like many socialist/communist countries. Sure, the average person on the street probably is not aware just how bad things have gotten in this nation except for the fact that he or she is paying much, much more for healthcare and getting less.
The first area I’m going to discuss is climate change. A few weeks ago I read a blurb on Facebook regarding how various state Attorney Generals were planning to prosecute businesses and people who didn’t adhere to the left’s proclamation on man-made climate change. I thought it was either a joke or something very extreme. I just couldn’t imagine there being any truth to this. But it looks like I was wrong. This story has grown some legs.
In an article on dailysignal.com by Hans von Spakovsky, the attorney general of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Claude E. Walker, has served a subpoena on the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) demanding documents related to CEI’s research on global climate change. Walker is part of a network of state Attorney Generals who have formed a grand inquisition to go after those they claim have lied about climate change, a contentious and unproven scientific theory.
CEI is a non-profit public policy institute that researches and publishes studies and reports on issues it believes are essential for entrepreneurship, innovation, and prosperity to flourish. It is dedicated to the principles of limited government, free enterprise, and individual liberty. CEI is well known for its high-quality, objective research on energy and climate issues, which clearly has made it a target of Walker.
The 14 page subpoena says that Inquisitor Walker is investigating ExxonMobil for “misrepresenting its knowledge of the likelihood that its products and activities have contributed to and are continuing to contribute to climate change in order to defraud the government and consumers.” This supposedly violates the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, aka RICO.
The subpoena demands that CEI turn over all documents, communications, statements, emails, op-eds, speeches, advertisements, letters to the editor, research, reports, studies, and memoranda of any kind, including drafts, that refer to climate change, greenhouse gases, carbon tax, climate science, and the like, in any way related to ExxonMobil or the products sold by or activities carried out by ExxonMobil that directly impact climate change, covering the period between 1/1/97 and 1/1/2007.
Walker is using a criminal statute designed to go after major drug dealers and mob organizations to go after a company that produces the gasoline and diesel fuel that Americans and the rest of the world use in their cars, trucks, boats, lawnmowers, and other equipment of every kind.
Also, ExxonMobil and CEI are being targeted for having taken what these legal barons consider the wrong side of a scientific theory that is being actively debated and questioned. The fact that ExxonMobil produces a relatively cheap, reliable energy source that helps power our world, but is disfavored by progressives and their political representatives like Walker seems to be what the company is really guilty of, according to dailysignal.com.
The dailysignal.com article goes on to indicate that what’s actually going on here appears to be an effort to intimidate, harass, frighten, and possibly imprison or fine anyone who Walker and his henchmen think is saying the wrong thing and who is standing in the way when it comes to forcing the rest of us to switch to politically correct and unreliable energy sources like wind and solar.
According to CEI General Counsel, Sam Kazman, the investigation is intended to silence and chill any opposition. It is disgraceful and contemptible behavior by public officials who are willing to exploit their power to achieve ideological ends. It is an affront to our First Amendment rights of free speech and association. What is happening to ExxonMobil and to CEI is persecution. It is an affront to free speech and vigorous scientific debate.
Because ExxonMobil is generally not well liked by the general public, the general public is probably not going to sit up and take notice of something like this. None-the-less, this is persecution of a private entity that the government doesn’t like, even though ExxonMobil and CEI is not doing anything illegal. They simply represent big business/big oil.
We’re haven’t reached the point where individuals who disagree with the government are rounded up in the middle of the night and taken to a gulag to be executed and/or tortured. But make no bones about it, we’re travelling in that direction. If we don’t recognize this type of behavior by the government for what it is, we’re going to find ourselves farther down that road where turning back may be impossible.
